Core vs. Non-Core: The Fundamental Distinction
Veterinary organizations, including the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP), classify pet vaccines into two categories: core and non-core. Understanding this distinction is the foundation of any meaningful conversation with your vet about your pet's preventive care.
Core vaccines are recommended for virtually all dogs or cats, regardless of lifestyle, because the diseases they prevent are either highly contagious, potentially fatal, or transmissible to humans. Non-core vaccines are administered based on individual risk factors — where your pet lives, how often they interact with other animals, and whether they spend time outdoors.
This framework is not about cutting corners; it is about tailoring protection to actual exposure risk. Your vet uses it during routine wellness exams to build a schedule that fits your specific pet.
Core Vaccines for Dogs and Cats
For dogs, the universally recognized core vaccines are:
- Rabies — legally required in most U.S. states; protects both the dog and humans.
- Distemper — a severe viral illness affecting the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.
- Parvovirus — an extremely contagious and often fatal viral disease, especially in puppies.
- Adenovirus (Hepatitis) — protects against infectious canine hepatitis.
These four are frequently delivered together in what is commonly called the DA2PP or DHPP combination vaccine, starting as early as 6–8 weeks of age for puppies, with boosters given every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks old, then again at one year, and periodically thereafter.
For cats, core vaccines include:
- Rabies — required by law in many states even for indoor cats.
- Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) and Calicivirus — key causes of upper respiratory infections.
- Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) — highly contagious and life-threatening, especially in kittens.
The last three are often combined in the FVRCP vaccine. Skipping or delaying these boosters is one of the gaps in pet health routines that can compound over time.
Non-Core Vaccines: When Lifestyle Drives the Decision
Non-core vaccines fill in the gaps where core protection does not reach. Your vet will assess your pet's environment and habits before recommending any of the following.
Common non-core vaccines for dogs:
- Bordetella (Kennel Cough) — strongly recommended for dogs that visit groomers, dog parks, boarding facilities, or training classes.
- Leptospirosis — a bacterial disease spread through contaminated water or wildlife urine; relevant for dogs in rural areas or those who swim in natural water sources.

Common non-core vaccines for cats:
- Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) — AAFP guidelines classify this as core for all kittens and as non-core for adult cats based on outdoor access and exposure risk.
- Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) — considered for outdoor cats in high-risk environments.
- Chlamydia felis and Bordetella — occasionally recommended for cats in multi-cat households or shelters.
Core vaccine
A vaccine recommended for all pets of a given species, regardless of lifestyle, because the disease it prevents is highly contagious, fatal, or poses a public health risk.
Non-core vaccine
A vaccine given selectively based on a pet's individual risk profile — including geographic location, lifestyle, and frequency of contact with other animals.
Titer test
A blood test that measures the concentration of antibodies in a pet's bloodstream, sometimes used to determine whether a booster shot is currently needed.
Booster shot
A follow-up dose of a vaccine administered after the initial series to maintain or renew a pet's immunity over time.
FVRCP
A combination vaccine for cats covering Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia — all three considered core vaccines for cats.
DA2PP / DHPP
A combination vaccine for dogs covering Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza — all considered core vaccines for dogs.
How Vets Determine the Right Schedule
Vaccination schedules are not one-size-fits-all. A vet considers several variables before recommending a protocol:
- Age and immune status — Puppies and kittens have maternal antibodies that can interfere with early vaccines, which is why a series of doses is needed rather than a single shot.
- Previous vaccination history — Titer testing (a blood test measuring existing antibody levels) can sometimes substitute for automatic re-vaccination in adult pets with documented immunity.
- Geographic risk — Disease prevalence varies by region. Leptospirosis and Lyme disease risk, for example, is significantly higher in certain states.
- Lifestyle exposure — An indoor-only cat and an outdoor cat living in the same household may have different recommended vaccine sets.
